I believe if you play on vanilla or novice you won't get the added monster tactics like refreshing, etc. The worldmerge has difficulties more vanilla, novice, expert, and master. This isn't the normal game difficulty, but the worldmerge new "difficulty" rankings which are in place.
Worldmerge lets you choose "difficulty" level when you start your character/set up menu.
